WFMW- keep your herbs and spices fresh!

This week Shannon is hosting a 'Best of' WFMW. So here, without further ado, is the very first WFMW tip that I posted...

Most of us know that light and heat cause the flavors and colors of dried herbs and spices to deteriorate. After throwing away dried herbs that had faded on my spice rack before I could use even 1/2 of the jar, I figured that there had to be a better way. That's when I found a better use for my spice rack (it displays my son's rock collection on the wall in his room!) and moved my jars of herbs and spices to the freezer.

Just make sure that the lid is tightly closed so that they don't clump when you put the spice or herb bottles in the freezer. Then pull them out, measure, and use as you normally would- no need to defrost first!

I've been doing this for several years (not the same set of herbs!) and it works for me. Make sure you check out more WFMW ideas here!

Ohh, thanks for the tip. I've got a herb garden started so I need ways to keep what I've got. :)

That's a great idea. What I have been doing lately is buying my herbs and spices from the bulk section at the health food store. They are much cheaper than the grocery store bottles and you can buy just a little bit at a time so it won't go "bad" before you use it all.

I think there are some spices that work better than others in the freezer. If you need a good spice rack solution, try SpiceStack. It holds 27 spice bottles from the grocery store in your dark, dry kitchen cabinet. Spices are always close, at eye level, and organized. The drop-down drawers let you find spices quick while cooking. Check it out at www.SpiceStack.com.
