Of boys and butterflies...

Young Son enjoys his "last meal" before the dreaded braces...

Today is the day begins our final journey into the land of orthodontia. Yup- three kids, all in braces or retainers. Talk about expensive- on the upside, however, I do save a lot of money on magazine subscriptions...

Young Son is getting a "butterfly". For those of you not familiar with this particular form of teeth straightening torture, a butterfly is a type of palate expander installed across the roof of the mouth. Each night you turn a key in the butterfly to widen it. That pushes the upper jaw out and creates more space. Young Son has a couple of eyeteeth that have not come in simply because there is no room for them. So hopefully this will help correct that problem.

Really the butterfly isn't as bad as it sounds- Teenage Daughter is on her second phase of braces and has one. Generally, some foods are harder to eat (like noodles) and for the first couple of days it's hard to talk clearly.

Which should also make his speech therapist's job a little more interesting!
