Boys...

The other day, I was working in the kitchen when I heard “It’s evolving!” exclaimed in the adjacent bathroom, Under other circumstances I might have been alarmed, but minutes later Young Son emerged from the bathroom, Game Boy in hand with Pokemon Diamond version installed...

You see, I have boys. Specifically, Teenage Son is almost 15 and Young Son just turned 10… Having grown up as an only child and being female- I knew little of the mysterious male world. Now however, I have to admit that I know more than I would even care to admit. For example-

I know what Pikachu evolves into, who the Avatar is, and which house Corey is in…

I can tell you how to get pea gravel out of a four year old’s nose and I’m an expert at discerning when stitches are needed (I can even remove them myself if needed).

I have seen all the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and Spiderman movies; not to mention every SpongeBob episode ever aired. Speaking of which- I know all the words to the “Goofy Goober” song.

Don’t get me wrong- having a daughter is an adventure too, but it’s a familiar one. I understand why 13 year old girls cry all the time. I already knew how to dress Barbie in skin-tight pants and get the boots on as well. I remember the trauma of not being included in the in-crowd and I empathize. Teenage Daughter may sometimes push my buttons, but I get why she does...

I like to imagine that someday I’ll get the whole “boy” thing figured out. In the meantime, I think I’ll just enjoy the ride…

The funniest part is when I realized later that it didn't even faze me that my son is sitting on the toilet while playing his Game Boy... That part seems perfectly normal to me!
